After many debates on global...warming, we're ironically facing now freezing cold weather.
Personally, I dislike the heat of summer, but I dread the cold of winter as it usually brings with it viruses and health issues. The annual influenza vaccine has not been helpful to me. The little mask is, and I still wear it when outdoors.
Science doesn't seem to have answers for us. Every day of the week we are notified about another natural disaster occurring in some part of the world, causing loss of lives, misery, and property damage.
We've been told that the massive glaciers in Antarctica are slowly melting, causing rise of water in the oceans, as a result of which, islands and coastal cities are going to be swalowed and totally disappear.
Earhquakes, tornadoes, volcano eruptions - are already 'busy' with contributing to the rest of the world's destruction. Climate change brings about escalation; the probability and intensity of disasters' occurrence, being higher than usual.
We are aware of things, and yet we do not know with exactitude when, where, and how they'll strike. That's why we seem to ignore obvious dangers, such as living by the sea, and around volcanoes.
Anyway, the Uknown is the worst of enemies. Knowledge is power that could help us better protect ouselves and our homes by teaching us how to avoid fires, floodings, drought, outages, finding the right shelter etc..

Weather in Toronto is unseasonably mild for January.
ReplyDeleteI suppose people of Toronto like the mild weather.
DeleteKnowledge is indeed power - but only if we act on it. Sadly we seem reluctant to do so.
ReplyDeleteCorrect , both on the personal level and on the national/global level.
DeleteI think this is a time we have to trust God.
ReplyDeleteI'm for trusting God at any time, certainly in times like this. I believe only God can stop or reduce the disasters.
DeleteDuta, it has been said that the Earth is our home and that we must take care of it. In spite of that, we continue to mistreat her.
ReplyDeleteWe must definitely take care of the Earth and treat it well. Polution is doing a lot of harm to the atmosphere, and we must stop that. Still, regardless of what we do or not, only God can handle the frequency and intensity of natural disasters.
DeleteWell, I think there are various treaties, gatherings, debates on the subject. Perhaps we'll see some results...or not. Governments are busy with elections , politics, and wars.
ReplyDeleteWe are indeed, a mess, and the logo seems to be - nothing matters any more. But climate change is - to be or not to be. And we people wish to live, so we can't be indifferent to all those unpredictable disasters.
ReplyDeleteI think you are right, we need to take care of the earth, but as you said, only God can control these disasters.
ReplyDeletePreventing pollution of the earth and atmosphere is very important. However, I believe that Climate Change itself can be monitored only by God.
DeleteSadly we do not always act upon the knowledge we know!
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Sadly, you're right on this, Jan.
DeleteYou can use the term Climate Change rather than Global Warming. The crises can appear in all sorts dangerous ways and in very different places. Apparently some small towns in the Australian outback have been suffering at 51c all week :(
ReplyDeleteI needed the word 'warming' to contrast with 'freezing cold' which is a rather ironic contrast, given the many debates on the topic of 'global warming'.
DeleteMarble Bar's all time heat record, before this New Year's
DeleteEve, was back in 1923-4.
Anything that's unknown is a challenge.
ReplyDeleteThe world is, indeed, full of challenges.
DeleteIt has been very cold here in Germany..but we at least had a couple of days of relief from snow. Now we have very windy, cold rainy weather.
ReplyDeleteI suppose people stay mainly indoors near a warmth source, and coziness.
DeleteSo many countries are trying to do the right thing, other countries don't which is sad, I remember learning in school in the late 50's that the waters from the sea will rise in certain areas - so they knew back then!
ReplyDeleteLet's face it, even if we have the knowledge, not sure we can prevent things from happening. We can only learn how to fly away from disasters but not preven them.
DeleteThe increasing wind speeds scare me. It all does!
ReplyDeleteHigh winds scare me too. In cold countries buildings are build solidly, but in our country, everything is loose: roof, walls, balconies. In winter, we tremble at any high wind or storm.
DeleteA co-worker's husband is a storm chaser for tornadoes. He continues to process data to try and find out why they occur and when and is giving better warning systems for folks to seek shelter. Janice
ReplyDeleteImproving warning systems to help folks to seek shelter sounds like the right measure.
DeleteWe do need to be prepared for dangerous weather and other natural occurrences, Duta. But I'm a huge doubter when it comes to so-called global warming. Back in the '80s, it was global cooling. Who's telling the truth?
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Climate Change replaces both phrases: global warming, and global cooling.
DeleteIndeed, Martha we do need to be prepared for dangerous natural occurrences.
We're having very odd weather here, too. Apart from about one week of bitter cold, we have had surprisingly warm (for the season) temperatures in from December to now and more to come, it appears. But when the temps drop, they seem to be pretty radical. It certainly seems to trigger tornadoes and other frightening weather.
ReplyDeleteAccording to an above canadian commenter, the weather in Toronto has been surprisingly mild in January.
DeleteAnyway, we've got to be prepared for all kinds of weather.
This change is hitting worst in our small island nations. Lots of cyclones and sea level rising.
ReplyDeleteYes, it is. I wonder whether there are any practical plans and solutions with regard to small islands. We can't let the people of these islands just getting swallowed by the ocean waters, God forbid.
DeleteAs Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”
ReplyDeleteJesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many.
You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.
Matthew 24:3-8
I've had the flu for the past 2 weeks. The vaccine didn't stop me from getting the flu this year but I haven't had the flu in years so there's that.
ReplyDeleteThey say the vaccine makes it milder. Well you don't get to the hospital, but the symptoms are there. With the mask I feel safer.
DeleteWe've been having strange weather here in California where I live. Today we expect to be in the 70's but we have rain coming in. When it's raining and warm it creates horrible fog which creates a lot of traffic accidents. We used to have fog a lot, so we knew somewhat how to drive in it, but this younger generation has not really experienced it and create some dangerous situations. I myself have my own theory of global warming, and I think it's solar panels. I just can't imagine that purposefully targeting the rays of the sun to Earth is a good idea, but I'm no scientist...so who knows?
ReplyDeleteThere may be something in what you say about solar panels, who knows.
DeleteAnyway, in a country with sun all year round like ours, solar power is getting very popular.
Same here .... I dislike the heat of summer, but the
ReplyDeletecold of winter is something that I can't tolerate.
The heat is not likeable, but at least, it doesn't bring with it the flu and other viral symptoms.
DeleteI love your words about knowledge being power to help us protect ourselves from some of these natural disasters. It's so true!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Dianna for agreeing with my words.
DeleteI used to dread winter for the snow (I live in a snowy climate, or at least I did until the past few years). Now I dread it for illness but I also know our relatively mild recent winters (well, many of them) is not so good in its own ways. Knowledge is power - if we use it and don't deny what is happening before our eyes.
ReplyDeleteWeather can be problematic regardless the angle from which we look at it.
DeleteI do agree with the last line of your comment about knowledge.
