The two terms 'strategy' and 'tactics' are mostly used in the military context. However, they are an integral part of every life domain. Strategy - plan, tactics - the steps that lead us to the achievement of the plan, whatever that is. The two are closely related, both are necessary to achieve one's goal.
Here's a trivial example. That's quite a common thing with shoppers to forget some already paid item at the store. It sometimes happens to me too. The plan is to get the item (s) back smoothly and quickly, yet, that's not always easy. It depends on circumstances, time of shopping, the vendor, details of the item in the receipt, etc.. So, I have to choose carefully the 'tactics' to achieve the above goal .
Usually, and based on my past experience, I won't call the store in question beforehand asking if they've seen, noticed or found the forgotten item. I'll just go back to the store, and assertively say in a few words: 'I've forgotten the X item. Here's the receipt, please bring it back to me'.
The assertive tone is crucial, if you don't want them to start asking questions such as: perhaps you forgot it in another store, or on the bus, perhaps it fell off the shopping cart , etc..
Sometimes, the threat of sending a complaint to management or a threat of never again buying there , shortens the process and make your tactics work in no time.
awful to leave things behind like that...sometimes items get left in the shopping cart, say bottom rack
ReplyDeleteI agree , Christine. It's rather awful to forget things, lleave them behind. But, it happens, nonetheless.
DeleteI've had that happen to me more than once. For some reason it seems to happen when food shopping, perhaps because you are handling multiple items.
ReplyDeleteI've recently forgotten an only item - a liquid shop bottle, as it was closing time, and everyone was in a rush. When a food item is forgotten, the vendor immediately grabs it to put it in a cool or freezing place.
DeleteWith assertive tone or not, that won't work here...if you forgot what you bought in the store, you can only FRIENDLY and SWEETLY ask if they have seen it or anyone else noticed it...
ReplyDeleteWell, it depends where you live. You may sweetly ask for it, but its return becomes tedious, to say the least.
DeleteI have done that too. With mixed success in getting the item returned to me.
ReplyDeleteWe all have our experience that guides us. Mind you, assertively, doesn't mean rudely, but it implies that we've already thought of all other possibilities.
ReplyDeleteI can't say this has happened to me very often, and I feel fortunate that it hasn't. What a hassle, Duta!
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
You may indeed feel fortunate. Forgetting a shopping item at the store is a very irritating happening!
DeleteI've done this too, thankfully the item was left for me at the courtesy counter!
ReplyDelete'courtesy counter' - I like that expression. It says everything - the area dedicated to customer service , inclusive return of forgotten items.
DeleteDuta, who wasn't a strategist to conquer the boy we liked?
ReplyDeleteIndeed, Norma , that required the greatest strategies of all- to conquer the heart of the boy or girl of our choice.
DeleteI shop at multiple grocery stores and seldom need enough things to employ a cart, but I think a combination of friendly and assertive gives the best result.
DeleteRight, Kathy. I need the cart as I don't drive, and I go to and from the store on foot.
DeleteI have left things before and depending on the drive back determined whether I went back or not. Janie
ReplyDeleteYes, the drive back is a factor to be considered.
DeleteSuch an inconvenience sometimes forgetting to pick that paid item up and putting it in the shopping bag. For us if we did forget and have done a few times we just go straight to the supermarket and one of the assistances will say, 'you left this behind, Mrs. D'...We are lucky.
ReplyDeleteSuch a nice reaction from the supermarket's assistant, makes one be ..glad of forgetting the item :)
DeleteThis happens to me the most at the place where you are supposed to save big time. There is just too many plastic bags to toss things in and then it doesn't get to you because of the line behind you. Thus, the store started relying on self-check out. But then they noticed they were the ones losing the item then. So, I see more cashiers now at those stores. Still there is a lot of congestion there. It is an ongoing battle. A lot of times, I just get the few things I came for. Maybe that's why I do like going to Aldi's instead.
ReplyDeleteToo many plastic bags , might indeed cause inconvenience and make one forget paid items at the store.
DeleteLast year I left my bag of groceries at the bus stop that was beside the grocery store.and didn't realize it until I got home. I called the store and they already had it and placed it in their cooler. We went back the next day and picked it up. Great service, no complaints. All stores are different just like the circumstances.
ReplyDeleteExactly, Bill. Different stores, different circumstances [ all sorts of stories on the issue of forgetting shopping items.
DeleteThank you for your comment on my poem post, it was perfect.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Inger. That was a lovely poem!
DeleteThat's a good tip.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Duta, for that tip. I had an experience recently of leaving behind some money that I had laid on the table in a restaurant and didn't realize it until I had left the dining area and went to pay my bill. Thankfully our waitress had found it and was on her way to bring it to me, but I know that doesn't always happen.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Dianna. Forgetting money or an item worth money is never a pleasant experience.
ReplyDeleteGlad that; "all's well that ends well. " You've got back your forgotten money.
I get so stressed when I am checking out - you have to unpack the food, watch the prices, see they are bagged, and pay. It is easy to lose track!
ReplyDeleteShopping is needed and even liked, but it does have its stressing points. We are aware of that, and do our best to cope.
DeleteI love the breakdown in definitions of the words:) And haven't we all left something behind when shopping, especially at the grocery store. Great tip.
ReplyDeleteSandra sandracox.blogspot.com
That's why I chose forgetting behind, as an example, as it is so common to human nature! Thanks, Sandra.
DeleteYou are so right. We don't often think that we are being "strategic" but we almost always think that we need to have a plan for whatever it is we are trying to accomplish. And the best plans involve finding the easiest or least confrontational way to reach our goal, whether it is something as simple as planning our day or some more complex project.
ReplyDeleteWell put and explained, Jeanie! We never think in military terms of strategy and tactics, but we actually do that a lot in our daily life.
DeleteI’ve forgotten many an item myself. It’s infuriating.
ReplyDeletewww.rsrue.blogspot.com
That's life. You're, of course, not alone in this, and we all get furious when it happens, promising ourselves that it won't happen again.
DeleteI can't ever remember leaving anything in a shop before, though I've had to return items which aren't fit for purpose on many occasions.
ReplyDeleteLucky you, Jo! Forgetting is quite an irritating sort of thing.
DeleteGreat insights on the difference between strategy and tactics! Your example about retrieving a forgotten item at the store really brings the concept to life. It's true that being assertive can make a big difference in such situations. Thanks for sharing your experience!
ReplyDeleteHey there! 🌟 I enjoyed reading your post. By the way, I recently wrote about something interesting. Check it out here: https://www.melodyjacob.com/2024/08/many-senior-citizens-still-follow-outdated-aspirin-advice.html
Would love to hear your thoughts!
Thank you Melody for your kind and sensible words. I'll gladly check your new post.
DeleteBuena definición haces de las dos.De momento nunca olvidé en una tienda. Sí he tenido que ir a devolver algo en mal estado y sin problemas.
ReplyDeleteBuena noche.
Un abrazo.
Good for you, Laura. Forgetting an item at the store might cause a lot of headache. Good night!
DeleteI haven't yet left anything in a shop, now I've written that I must make sure I don't!
ReplyDeleteIn many of our larger stores we have a customer service counter which is usually helpful for those who may experience problems.
All the best Jan
A customer service counter does indeed, sound like a helpful idea!
DeleteOs conceitos de que fala são também recorrentes no mundo do futebol.
ReplyDeleteAbraço de amizade.

My knowledge of football is null, so I wouldn't know what you're referring to , Juvenal.
DeleteDuta, how are things in your area of the world? Prayers continue.
ReplyDeleteWe live by the day. Thanks a lot, Dianna dear for your prayers.
