Metals and Health

I remember buying my Mom a copper bracelet, said to fight arthritis. She looked happy with it , and that made me happy too. Did it help? I don't know. The full name of the gift was - London Sabona Copper Bracelet (made with the purest copper available).

Apropo copper, I saw an advertisement on 'copper infused knee sleeve support'. It made me curious as I usually put on knee sleeves before going out on a long walk. I'll probably know what this copper infusion is only when I buy the item, as there were no details in the ad.

I used to read about precious metals (gold, silver, titanium) that they're good for jewelry and the economy, but not for health. Well,  this has changed. Now,  the claim is that precious metals are beneficial to our well being. Silver has anti- microbial properties, gold and titanium are used in anti-cancer drugs and procedures.

Moreover, they say,  the metal jewelry we wear, helps the body achieve balance and bring about mental peace. Good to know that, and hopefully, it is backed by science.
After all, most of us, women, do wear jewelry quite regularly. Of course, we have to beware of allergies caused by certain metals or metal alloys.
My favorite precious metal is 9-karat gold ; it has low purity of gold (after 24, 18, 14, 12 karat) but I like its warm color and feel on the skin.

I believe  the gems, embedded or not in the metal jewelry pieces, with their beauty, clarity, and cut, also contribute to peace of mind and good feelings.

On another matter...
This month, we celebrate Passover (Pesach), starting with the 22 of April.
I've got cleaning  and other things to do, so , the coming week, I'll be  taking a break from blogging.
God willing, see you beginning of next month!

  3. I only wear precious metals (gold and silver) because they last forever, beautifully. I also use silver for all the decorative table ware we use weekly eg challah plate, candle sticks, matzah dish. But if they are beneficial to human well being, even better :)

    Happy and healthy Pessach!

Anyway, thanks Margaret, for the Passover wishes.

I don't and the other metals like gold, silver etc doesn't change your mental peace I know a lot of ladies decorated like Christmas trees with gold jewelery and they are mostly not at all in mental peace, rather the opposite.

    1. Well, people are free to believe whatever they wish. Copper does have quite a lot of believers in its anti-arthritis activity. As for the other metals mentioned here, it's probably a matter of subjective feelings.

  16. Hello Duta! I wanted to tell you that I have worn the copper infused sleeves for my knees and they do actually feel really good. I have to admit though that I have wondered, is it the warmth or the copper that makes my knee feel better? It would definitely be worth a try.

    1. The green layer is a natural reaction, and not at all harmful. It happens as a result of copper mingling with sweat, oxygen, or other element. It can easily be cleaned with soap and water.

  24. Hey Duta,

Just wanted to drop you a quick note to say that I'm here patiently waiting for your return to your blog. I hope the Pesach cleaning is going smoothly for you! Sending you early wishes for a blessed Pesach celebration

Oh, and about jewelry, metals... I don't know much about them, but before I came to faith in God, I truly believed that certain stones would protect me. Now, I believe only God can do that and that my times are in His hands. I really love jewelry with beads, Duta. I'm really fond of glass beads.

  25. My grandparents wore copper bracelets as they believed it relieved arthritis. It's interesting to think about what we could be absorbing through our skins when wearing various metals. I wear 22k gold jewellery as am lucky to have a generous husband! I have met people who are allergic to gold and can't understand why as it's such a pure metal. Betty

    1. Gold can also cause allergy if it's blended with other metals. I wear earrings of 18 karat gold. Lower gold purity might cause allergy in the area of the earlobs.

  28. I used to wear a cooper bracelet but I don't know if helped or not. Somewhere along the line, I quit wearing it. Interesting about all the metals. I don't wear much jewelry...used to wear bracelets but now that I wear my fitbit, I tend not to. Don't wear yourself out cleaning.

    1. Nowadays, the tendency is one of a minimalistic look. In some cultures, women wear their almost all jewelry items on the body, instead of storing it at home - a sort of safe storage place.

  39. I tend to believe that metals can affect our bodies, both for good and not so good. I can't wear any jewelry that has nickel in it. The second that I put on a piece of jewelry with nickel in it my skin gets irritated and itchy, I can't imagine what would happen if I were to swallow nickel and have it inside my body, it probably wouldn't be good.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Nickel is bad for me too. My earlobs are sensitive even to gold, if it's mixed with a low quality metal. Thus my earrings are of, at least ,18 karat gold.

  40. Recently I had a tendon injury on my wrist and read somewhere that gold helps with pain. So I wore a gold bracelet on that wrist. It did help with pain. I tried the copper knee sleeves. It does help but the edging was too tight and made deep groves which was too painful. I may have to look for a larger size.
