On the 22 of November, dozens of packages containing many kilograms of drugs washed up on the beaches of the Mediterranean, from northern Israel (Naharia, Haifa, Tirat Hakarmel, Zichron Ya'akov) to its center (Tel-Aviv, Rishon- Lezion).
At first, there was panic ; fear of packages containing explosives. So, the police were called to inspect them and look for additional packages. Next, the dumped stuff was transferred to a police lab.
Could be it was a failed smuggling operation of packages tossed from a passing ship for locals to collect. The other possibility is that the israeli owner was trying, for some reason, to get rid of the illegal drugs and threw them into the sea.
So far, we haven't heard anything from the police, and that's frustrating.
I recall something similar in the past, but it was on a much smaller scale, and long before the talks on cannabis' legalization.
Anyway, this kind of happening causes security panic, and it might damage the marine fauna (the packages of marijuana were non water proof).

Drugs are a big issue with big money and we might know nothing or very little about those involved in this. Just wondering about it.

DeleteIt doesn't make sense, does it? People who want to use or sell the drugs will be distraught over the huge amount of money lost. And people who want to it damage the marine fauna can find much easier ways to achieve their goal.
ReplyDeleteI would be inclined to believe your first hypothesis: to put fear in peoples' hearts about packages containing explosives. But the police would warn every citizen, if that was true. My son lives on the beach near Tel Aviv...he hasn't said a word sofar :(

Right; it doesn't make sense, but we, the law abiding citizens understand very little in drugs, the huge money involved, the damage done to humans and non-humans.

DeleteWOW, that's quite a mystery for sure. Thank goodness it wasn't explosives, but who knows how dangerous it is for fish etc. I would be frustrated too at not knowing what's going on. Wonder why the police are being so secreative about it. Keep us posted if you learn anything more about it.
ReplyDeletePolice has its reasons for keeping secrecy, at least at this stage. It's no easy investigation. Drugs is dangerous stuff, both for humans and for fish.

DeleteEsta situación se da mucho en el Sur de España, a poco más de una hora de donde yo vivo, ya que tenemos el Norte de Africa a tiro de piedra, y suelen tirar la marihuana por la borda cuando se ven perseguidos por la policía española, con el fin de aligerar el peso de la lanchas para poder escapar, o para que la policía se dedique a la capturas de los fardos y abandone la persecución.
ReplyDeleteEn cuanto a lo que te preocupa te puedo decir de que si se trata de planta naturales como el cannabis, que es con lo que se trafica por aquí, no pasa absolutamente nada a los peces ni al agua, pero si se trata de drogas como la cocaína que está tratadas químicamente no sabría decirte, pero pienso que serían insignificantes los daños comparándolo con las inmensidad del mar y la fuerza de las corrientes marinas. Más daño pueden hacer los embalajes sobre todo, sin son de plásticos.

DeleteWe have the same thing in the U.S. It is frightening, but so is learning that when my ex huband and I lived in Alaska (he was in the Army) they buried nerve gas in barrels in the nearby river. Hope you have a great week.
