'The sky is the limit' is the name given to the above public sculpture placed at the very beginning of a major street in a town adjacent to mine (Ramat-Gan town). Whenever I'm in the area, I pause to have a look at it, and each time I discover some new and exciting detail.
The sculpture , donated to the city by the internationally renowned israeli painter and sculptor, David Gerstein , is made of a laser cut metal frame, and hand-painted wooden figures (one in each of the spaces) in playful daily life scenes. On top of it, a human figure symbolically pointing at the sky.
placed at a busy intersection of two major streets
The area surrounding the exhibit comprises some of the tallest sky scrapers in the country. Two lovely coffee shops, one at each side of the street offer their customers a nice view of the colorful sculpture and of the street with its passersby and car/bus traffic.
What could be better than two excellent coffee shops that enable people to drink espresso and analyse the sculpture at the same time. And if you don't quite understand the wooden figures the first visit, you can go back every week and start all over again :) In fact I would take my students.
ReplyDeleteExactly!
DeleteThe coffee shop across the street ('Aroma" chain) has a small recreation spot in front of it - with a cooling, tiny pool, benches and flowers. Ideal green place in an urban, congestioned environment.
I quite like it!
ReplyDeleteIt's unanimously liked: colorful, funny, appeals to one's senses.
DeleteSo great to see this display of art. And to enjoy from a coffee shop even better. Love the colors in it too. Thanks for the post.
ReplyDeleteIt's the right thing in the right place - a piece of colorful, humorous art in a busy corner of the town. The donor was once a resident of this town, so he knew what would please the eye in this particular area.
DeleteHow fun!
ReplyDeleteYes, looking at it can be fun.
DeleteI would love to see it in person! I think I would be like you, Duta, always finding something new every time I saw it. Very imaginative of the one who created such a design! I like where they placed it too! Have you visited the two coffeeshops and do you have a favorite of the two if you have?
ReplyDeletebetty
Well the one who has created it is a famous artist: sculptor, painter and teacher at the Academy of Arts in Jerusalem.
DeleteI've visited only the 'Aroma' across the street which belongs to a high quality chain of coffee shops.
Such a gorgeous sculpture! Such creativity. I'm always in awe of artists that can create such unique artwork. Thank you for sharing this with us. The flower is a Lantana and I was surprised to see it on your post because it's one of my favorites. Yesterday I was in a local nursery and they had 1-gallon Lantana plants 3 for $10 and they had a very unique red one that I had not seen before so I grabbed 3 thinking to gift one to my sister Lisa and my sister in law Connie, but when I went to pay they were $8.98 each, a little out of my budget, now I wish I had bought at least one. By the time I go back this weekend, I'm sure the will be gone. The name of the one I wanted was Blood Dragon Lantana, even the name is exotic!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome.
DeleteThese flowers , in reality, are exquisite! I'm not good at names of flowers and plants, but I'll make it my 'mission' to remember the name mentioned by you.
Exquisite! The creativity of people amazes me.
ReplyDeleteHow are you, Duta? How is life there now that some of the restrictions have been lifted?
Indeed it does. As for your question, almost all the restrictions have been lfted. Me, I keep wearing the mask and trying to avoid crowded places, if not for covid sake, at least for the flu sake.
DeleteThe flowers. I like the flowers above all :)
ReplyDeleteThe picture doesn't do them justice. The flowers are superb!
DeleteThat is such a lovely sculpture and so colourful.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Both your epiteths, Jan, are correct: lovely, colorful.
DeleteVery nice
ReplyDeleteNot only that , but makes one think about the figures, the colors, the materials used
DeleteThis is a great post, it's very interesting and informative. Thank you for sharing this. I could sit and enjoy this exhibit for hours. I wish you well, my friend!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your kind words. I believe you when you say you could watch the exhibit for hours.
DeleteI love pieces of art like this, out for the public to enjoy . This is a great piece, one I would stop to look at every time I came by.
ReplyDeleteI can assure you the public highly appreciates this kind of art that is created with the public in mind, seeking to attract to it the people on the street.
DeleteOn the subject of "sky"...today is the longest in ages we've experience a blue sky. (I'm whispering it so as not to awaken the clouds!). We've had lots and lots, and lots of rain so far this year. It's great to see a clear sky for a change.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the exhibits with us...take good care, stay safe, DUTA. :)
I like your humor, Lee. After lots of rain, a clear sky is definitely a big reward.
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful sculpture with interesting figures. The flowers are in full bloom.
ReplyDeleteThe flowers are beautiful, the sculpture interesting, and the coffee from the adjacent cafe tasty. Idyllic!
DeleteI love this kind of unique places and sculptures - I think the name of them is a perfect match with this sculpture. And this all flowers - I can almost smell them them :-)
ReplyDeleteTrue Carolyna. The name of the sculpture and the flowers are a perfect match to this piece of art.
DeleteI totally agree :-) Thank you your visit on my blog. Have a lovely weekend
DeleteYou're welcome.
DeleteUma excelente quarta-feira minha querida amiga Duta.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Luiz Gomes. Wishing an excellent day to you, too!
DeleteThese sculptures are different and very nice. Thanks for sharing as it's nice to see what's about in your country..
ReplyDeleteIndeed. It's not a usual kind of sculpture. It conveys a serious message (you can achieve anything) and at the same time it's funny, with its colorful figures.
DeleteWhat a wonderful thing to see! Thank you.
ReplyDeleteAs mentioned in the post, every time I happen to be in the area, I pause to have a look at it again. I like it.
ReplyDeleteI do love public art and this is so colorful and creative -- very unusual. I should think it would attract loads of attention. And thanks for coming by, too!
ReplyDeleteWell, the creator is a famous, prolific artist. Im not familiar with other of his public works; this particular sculpture was offered as a gift to the city where he lived for many years. (at present, he's resident of Jerusalem). The area where the sculpture is located, is a busy, popular area, and so, the sculpture attracts many visitors.
ReplyDeleteIt sure is an interesting sculpture. I can see why you keep visiting it to find something new.
ReplyDeleteThere is something about the figures that appeals to me. I can't explain it.
DeleteI looked several times, but I can't warm up to this creation, I am myself in this milieu and that's a bit too much. But everybody has his own taste and it would be sad if we would all be the same !
ReplyDeleteHi Gattina. You don't have to like it; each to his own taste. I would like to mention, though, that the picture is not not clear enough and doesn't do justice to the sculpture.
DeleteI think that visiting the sculpture often would reveal new views each time as there is so much detail and colour in it. It's fun and lighthearted, and we certainly need all of that these days.
ReplyDeleteThat's correct, Lorrie. I like the word 'lighthearted' in your comment.Indeed, it's what we need these days.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this sculpture, DUTA. I think it is lovely, and shows so much creativity. You notice and appreciate everything that surrounds you, no matter where you are. I think we're lucky that you love to share with your blogging friends...you take me to places I would never get to see, otherwise. Stay well, DUTA.
ReplyDeleteThanks Bica for your kind words. I feel flattered. Blessings and hugs to you!
DeleteWhat a beautiful sculpture, DUTA. Thank you for sharing it with us. There is so much to see an appreciate while gazing at it from different angles.
ReplyDeleteYou're definitely right,Kay. Works like this sculpture are the right way to attract ordinary people's attention, and make them enjoy art.
DeleteWOW!! What an interesting and colorful piece of public art. Isn't it a shame they have to tell people not to climb it...you just know some jerk will try at some point. The fact that this piece of art is in a busy spot is great, more can view it.
ReplyDeleteA shame indeed, to have to ask people not to climb the statue, but we live in an ugly reality. I'm sure some people have tried the climbing, perhaps in the dark hours when not seen by passersby.
DeleteLooks like a sculpture worth revisiting!
ReplyDeleteIt does. I always revisit it when I happen to be in the vicinity. It's located in a central spot, so it gets visited daily by lots of people.
