Inner Voice

Yes, there is such a thing as inner voice, I've discovered that after retiring from the workforce. It doesn't control me, but I listen to it.

Here are some examples of what it says:

quotes

Sometimes I wish to introduce in my posts a few well-known quotations as other bloggers do. Well, here's my inner voice's reaction to that: 'At your age, you should have your own pearls of wisdom, not use those of other people'.

flowers

I ocassionally get flowers, but rarely offer flowers to others. My inner voice says: 'Leave them in their natural bed, don't kill them. Flowers are not like fruit and edible plants. They are not needed in nutrition; they exist mainly to delight our eyes with their beauty, colors , and shape. Prolong their life by leaving them in their  growing place'.

climate

A lot of bloggers write about the weather. 'Don't,  says my inner voice. It's God's domain. You may write, if you wish about pollution - that's more like Man's domain. Complaining about the weather might make God angry'.

Warnings

I'm all for freedom of speech and thought. I don't mind differences of opinion; I can cope with that.

'Beware! says my inner voice, you are in the minority. You'd better keep your mouth shut if you don't want to lose friends and even family. They might  cut off relationship with you'.

Well, here my inner voice has a conflict with my self. I'm not willing to give up  the basic value of freedom. If the above, wish to leave me because I think differently, well, so be it.

Corruption

Corruption is everywhere, even at the most unexpected places
such as Help/Volunteering organizations. (I became suspicious after I noticed the huge number of such organizations. I found out they get significant funds from the government and from various philanthropic bodies with almost non existing supervision. Where there's big money, there's always corruption).

'You cannot and should not trust anyone but God , says  my inner voice, and I know from daily experience that this is so.

Health

'Try homemade remedies first, before rushing to the clinic / hospital ; don't make yourself dependent on doctors and medical procedures. Dependence is slow death' - says my inner voice.

'Keep it small and simple! Save your energy!  No  upstairs, downstairs house, no big garden.  Even hiring and employing people like a gardener or a cleaning lady - is Work, and at a certain age (usually after crossing 70), any work becomes hard to do'.

*

I tend to tell people that, in my opinion, Retirement,  which marks the beginning of the third and last phase in  life, is our only chance to have some kind of dialogue with our body and soul. This dialogue benefits us, and we wish we had done that earlier.

  2. So true, so true.
I'm 65 and I have begun to stretch a bit with having an opinion. I taught school for many years and I have moderated my opinion to please most people most of the time. There were times I felt a bit uncomfortable with an politically opinionated parent who assumed I agreed with them. But it is just talk in the end.
I am walking the same route into getting older which is a privilege. But it does call for some soul searching.

    1. Teachers are usually expected to play the card of 'politically correct', and that's hard on them.
"soul searching" - I like the expression. Indeed, advancing in age does call for some soul searching.

  3. I smiled reading this. I've had some of those same dialogues with myself! But I chuckled with the quotes. For me it wasn't thinking I had my own words of wisdom. It was being too lazy to dig up the quotes!

I know how it is. I'm lazy too, both finding the right quotes or trying to figure out some wise thing of my own to say or write..

  4. Did you change your blog header picture? I like it :) And if you changed it months ago, sorry it took me so long to notice it :)

I like your inner voice. Some might say it is a filter, something the world needs more of these days I think. My inner voice tells me not to write comments on people's Facebook posts that potentially could cause division and strife. Most of the time I listen to that inner voice. The times I haven't, I ended up causing a friendship to end :(

  5. Ah nice nuggets of wisdom. I agree with all of it I do tend to trust people but I will never bring them into a situation where they could misuse that trust ;) I also find freedom of speech very important as long as people use respect towards others, then its fine

I'm afraid we cannot always prevent misuse of our trust. As for freedom of speech, I'm for it as long as it doesn't cause harm to individuals or society.

  9. Do I have an inner voice? If I do I am not consciously aware of it. I have inner thoughts all the time, some of which get translated into action, but the concept of some mystical or metaphysical presence in my head that I listen to? I think not.
I fear we are going to pretty much disagree today, Duta.

Quotes – There have been so many incredible wordsmiths throughout the ages, it would seem a pity not to refer to them. I quoted Charles Hartshorne in my last post. No one, in my opinion, described bird song so well and I am happy to share his words with others. We are not all well equipped to have our own “pearls of wisdom” as you put it. I could never have come close to his eloquence. Should the African American population of the United Sates not cite the powerful words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr?

Flowers – They clearly do not exist “mainly to delight our eyes”. They are essential in the realm of pollination and the continuance of life on earth. And delight is a movable concept anyway. It is irrelevant whether the flower in my garden hosting a bumblebee right now delights my eyes.

Climate – God might get angry if we talk about the weather? I hadn’t realized that believers subscribed to such censorship. Or that their god would perhaps be mad if we opined that we wished it would stop raining.

Warnings – Here I agree with you. Freedom of speech is so precious (unless it descends to hatred of the other, or advocating genocide) we should do everything in our power to preserve it, inner voice be damned.

Corruption – A permanent component of the human condition I am afraid. Greedy, unscrupulous people will always be with us. God is a human creation and not vice versa, with as many varieties as stones in the desert. So, you can believe in this invisible man (or woman, or multi-armed elephant) all you want and it is not going to change anything.

Health – Eat well, exercise, take care of your mind and body but consult the doctor when you need to. Dependence, as you describe it, is sometimes a fact. A young friend of mine is waiting for a kidney transplant. In the meantime, he is on dialysis several times a week. You might call that dependence but without it he will die. The transplant offers him the chance of a life with many years ahead of him.

I am not sure that retirement is our only chance to have a conversation with our body - forget about soul. It may be for some but that is an awfully broad generalization.

Having taken far too much of your time – Have a nice day!

    1. Well, we'll kindly agree at least on one thing. I wrote about myself, my inner voice, my Retirement my beliefs, my understanding of concepts such as dependence, freedom, corruption.

I certainly wasn't thinking of the afro-american population, Luther King or Charles Harthshorne.
I was thinking though, with some pity, of those that don't believe in God, or those that believe they can change Climate.

I was mot trying to convince anyone of anything or preach what's right and wrong (as you do here). I was just exerting my right to freedom of thought, in my little blog.

As for flowers, I know ,of course, about the importance of pollination; that's why I inserted the word 'mainly' in 'mainly to delight our eyes'.

  10. Most people find it hard to accept differences of opinion, and this sometimes leads to cutting off relationship. The expression 'let's agree to disagree' seems to have totally vanished from the vocabulary.

Here are some of my home remedies:
      - applying ice on the affected area- it relieves pain and reduces/prevents swelling.
      - drinking undiluted freshly squeezed lemon juice for a sore throat; the problem vanishes immediately.
      - gargling chamomile tea to treat mouth infection.

  14. A very good post, DUTA. I try not to make posts too obvious, as to what my stance is on all things political. I do use quotations, every now and then, as sometimes they just fit with what I'm trying to say. Always better to have your own opinions and beliefs, though, I agree.

  17. I also have such an inner voice :) About for flowers, we think the same. The weather ... oh, you sounds like my husband. But when it comes to quoting, my inner voice says something else. Oh no, it's the voice of C.H. Spurgeon: "The man who never reads will never be read; he who never quotes will never be quoted. He who does not want to use the intelligence of others that he himself has no intelligence." That was new for me. I read it last week. What do you think about it :)

    1. I don't have 'never' in my vocabulary; it's a too far-reached word.I try to consider all possibilities, and not be locked on things.
It seems to me that C.H. Spurgeon's opinion is highly exaggerated.

  18. Your inner voice is full of wisdom, Duta! Speaking of corruption, we volunteered at the Food Pantry and after a while realized that the people working there were taking the food home. The leader of it took a dozen turkeys home, she said she had a large freezer there to store them in. It was a farce, workers taking food home instead of giving it to those who needed it, the purpose of the food pantry. We soon quit helping out there! I so agree with you about the weather, actually with most of this, doctors and all.

    1. I feel flattered by your opinion on my "inner voice", dear Pam.
The story at the Food Pantry sounds funny, but it's not actually. This is only a tiny sample of what's going on there. I've heard of cases where the leaders put the funds, generously given to the organization, straight into their pocket, while almost shamelessly 'enslaving' the volunteers.
