CORONAVIRUS

It's rather hard to concentrate on blogging when every day brings with it some bad news about coronavirus.

Our warning example is the outbreak in Italy. The italians haven't taken it seriously from the beginning,  and now Italy is completely paralyzed.
We, in Israel have taken it more seriously, and yet we are probably at the stage were contamination cannot be prevented any further, despite on going drastic measures. This is panicking, because our Health Care System will not be able to deal with hundreds  of corona patients simultaneously.

One would think medical people know a lot about the virus, and the only thing now is to come up with a vaccine.
Well, the corona seems to be very elusive. People that infect others are in many cases  asymptomatic, the disease is described as a mild sort of flu, but those who recover from it might still.infect others .

They say it is dangerous  mainly for  elderly people with chronic disease history. There's, however, a 38 year old driver with no such history (albeit a smoker), hospitalized in serious condition.
Now we have a 9-year old too on the list although they say the virus seems to avoid children.

Besides blaming the chinese for eating snake meat and bat meat, additional blame is put on the airplane. Yes.the vehicle that connects countries also helps spread the virus.  So, flights get cancelled, airports closed.  Nobody knows what next.

We are reminded to wash our hands thoroughly. That's something most of us do regularly.  Pity we are not reminded to watch our immune system and make any effort to strenghten it. That would be very rewarding.

Where does all this lead to, total collapse? Only God knows.

  1. How many cases does Israel have now?

We have 7 in our state, no fatalities. A school was closed when one of the students' parents was diagnosed.

    2. The JHU website says you have 131 cases now. It's creeping around the world.
I think we know the best thing to prevent illness is the eat well, sleep well, and wash your hands. That said, this virus is virulent and social isolation really helps.

    3. They've closed everything here. We have 26 cases. Just read Trump tested negative. Tomorrow the USA is having a day of prayer. Join us! 🌸

    4. So far, we've got 200 cases; the spreading is speedy.
Yes, prayer is definitely needed; we should all join in the day prayer!

  2. We are in much the same boat. One would think the U.S. would plan ahead, actually have a plan and be on top of things but it is pretty much chaos here. Trump counteracts everything his coronavirus task team say -- "It's OK to shake hands!" for one. He's modeling bad behaviour. And lying to the public about the scope, which is also immediately contradicted by his team. I wonder how many will be unemployed after this is done. He doesn't like people who go against him. Such a jerk and at this point, dangerous for our country. So many innocent people are getting this virus. He's being so careless. It would serve him right to experience it first hand.

    1. At a time such as this, it's important that the political leader is supportive and constructive.
Trump might lose the elections if the oronavirus gets the daily headlines.

    2. This is why Trump hasn't allowed testing in January, when it began in North America. He is useless.

  3. This coronavirus is such a mystery and so very unpredictable. And you're right, only God knows where all this will lead. I pray our medical professionals and leaders gets their acts together soon and do something helpful about this virus.

    1. As with Climate Change disasters, this too is in God's hands. We humans, seem quite helpless. Unity of forces - medical and political - could be of help.

  4. At this point I really don't know what to believe. So much miss info. Best thing to do is basic hygiene of washing hands often and staying home when sick. Yesterday they reported here in the news 1000 new flu cases over the last week and here we only have 6 people with coronavirus.
And the flu has a shot to help prevent it. I am not making light of it. I just don't know what to believe any more.

    1. " the flu has a shot to prevent it". Well, yes, but people still get it, and many die of it. I would say we were too complacent about the vaccine. It's not working as promised. The whole gama of corona viruses and their vaccines should be revised.

  5. If this virus is not seriously contained, and quickly, it has the potential to reduce the world population to a measurable degree. Not a bad thing perhaps!

    1. You might be right.
Your country, Canada, has a vast territoy and a low-density population. That's a big advantage. Italy, for example is densely populated, and that doesn't help stop transmission of the virus.

  6. Hi Duta, Taiwan has been a good model of handling the spread of the virus. They took decisive actions right away,, and they have been able to contain it and now seems to be at last some settling down there, so lets hope that each country to follow will also be able to stay calm and act decisively and the people too , we have to do our part. Meanwhile, we are commanded to rejoice on Purim, so I hope wish you a Chag Sameach!! I sent you a card:)) ♡

    1. Hi Shayndel,
There's hope indeed that decisiveness, even agressive actions may help prevent the virus spreading. Well, we are now at the phase of these actions.
      Let's hope for the best.
      Purim Sameah!

  7. It's awful here in the US as our president and his administration don't believe in medical expertise and keep giving conflicting information. And there are not enough tests. Governors of our states are taking action as needed, who knows if that will be enough.

Well, at least the local governors are taking action to prevent spreading of the virus.
With each day we learn something new and try to adjust to this rather nightmarish reality.

Nevertheless, we've got to keep calm and take the right precautions, until God will help us find the solution.

We haven't ordered closing of schools yet, and that's not ok. Corona seems to attack children too. We've got 3 cases of children so far(a 100 cases in general).

  10. It has now been declared a pandemic.

Actor Tom Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson are in quarantine/lock-down here in the Gold Coast...in south-east Queensland. He's here in Australia making a movie about Elvis Presley...Hanks is playing the role of Colonel Tom Parker. The whole production has been shut down...again. It was shut down a few weeks ago because of flooding from a heavy storm.

    Commonsense prevails...

    1. The corona virus doesn't distinguish between celebrities and regular people. It attacks us all.

Among our 100 cases so far, we've got people of all ages, gender, profession.

Anyway, Elvis Presley deserves the best movie and actors in his honor.

  14. The virus came from China and has infected all countries. Italy has a lot of tourists but they are not to blame, they took the right measures right away and closed everything down. Since today it also happened here in Belgium, the Netherlands, and France. All shops closed except the food supermarkets, no schools, no university but they can study online, bars, restaurants, cafés all closed, all sport events cancelled all gatherings cancelled no church service at all not even funerals.
We are all sitting in the same boat and are confined to stay home. My son and DIL work from home, but the schools are still open in Amsterdam. Eastern countries are also affected like Poland especially. Football games cancelled even the Formular 1. It is a catastrophe. The first Virus war !

    1. It looksw bad from any angle we look at it.
Interesting point: we've got a lot of doctors in quarantine.

Anyway, the quick spreading of the virus seems to be due to the big waves of tourism and globalization moves.

  15. I have read your post, Duta, and all the comments preceding my own. While I too agree that this virus has paralyzed so many countries and industry, I also fault the media for causing some of the hysteria that seems to be going around. Many people are in panic mode and stockpiling goods like crazy. Today, I saw 2 local supermarkets with completely empty shelves which normally contained toilet paper. Why is there such madness to buy up all of that? And don't even think about getting hand sanitizer anywhere. We do wash our hands as often as necessary, refrain from face touching and try to avoid large groups, but in a supermarket how is that even possible? Many local events here have already been cancelled or postponed.

    1. The empty shelves phenomenon is indeed peculiar. Even in my country where we rely heavily on import and this might leave us with shortage of goods for a long period of time.
Yes, I do agree with you about the media causing hysteria.

  16. I have to agree with the comment here regarding the media helping to fan hysteria and panic. I also don't feel that the internet helps much either with so many people putting their opinions forward on what governments and leaders should and should not do. However most of those opinions seem to be based on no understanding at all of Virology and fuelled only by emotion and panic....

    1. From what I understand, the rhytm of virus transmission is very quick, and that's what's causing the panic. The disease on the other hand, starts and progresses slowly,so the experts know little about how to deal with it.
It's probably going to take quite a while to find a solution.

  17. I've got this feeling that we'll not get rid of it quickly . The emphasis now is to prevent spreading of the viros, and only then find a way to deal with the disease caused by it.
    It's all very worrying indeed.

  20. I also heard that many Chinese men faced fatalities due to the fact Chinese men smoke so much along with women smokers. People in my community here in southwestern U.S. are posting some interesting health stats that I appreciate learning about. Things to avoid and things to make sure we do.

  21. DUTA, I think both of us are in that group where we're "high risk", due to our age. That, in itself is scary. People who are trying to politicize this, I wish would stop, but then there are those, who live, to spew their biases and hatred, purely based on politics. Wishing you well, DUTA, as well as the rest of us. Frightening times, for sure.

  22. It's a world gone mad DUTA! In the last two weeks our lives have been turned upside down. Our stores are empty, our schools have closed, our government has shut down, we can't be in groups of more than 10 people, wedding have been cancelled, we can't bury our dead with proper funeral ceremonies, our aged are frightened out of their minds and if they are 65 or older they are asked to remain in their homes. Restaurants are closed, church services are being conducted online. People are losing their jobs and there are no answers. And there doesn't seem to be an answer in the foreseeable future.

I'm glad to hear you are well. I'm getting by, still at work since we are a small office and we don't have any foot traffic. Just crossing my fingers that I don't get sick and that my 84 year old mom remains healthy as well. All we can do at this point is pray, wash our hands and look out for each other. Stay safe, well and healthy dear friend.

Yes, all around us is mad and unbelievable.
But we'd better believe it if we don't wish to find ourselves like Italy with hundreds of infected people and many deaths per day.
