Engelbert Humperdinck

 youtube video

I thought he was no longer with us, and then, I came upon a piece of news informing the reader that he would be on tour till the end of 2024.

He, the 88 amazing, popular british pop singer Engelbert Humperdinck (professional name),  Arnold George Dorsay  (real name).

I always had some trouble with pronouncing his professional name (originally the name of a german composer), but I loved his velvety voice and his romantic songs, so, no big effort.

Engel was one of ten children, born in India to a british couple.  His wife of 57 years, Patricia Dorsay, with whom he had four children, died in 2021, battling with both Alzheimer and Covid.  He was, of course, devastated,  by her suffering and death.

Among his famous songs (performed mostly in solo concerts format, but also in duet with other singers)  :    'Man without Love', 'Spanish Eyes', 'The last Waltz', 'I can't stop loving you',  'Quando, Quando', and many others.  Each of the songs - a pearl of great music, great lyrics and great performance.

  1. I had no idea he was still going. Touring at his age is truly impressive.

    1. In the firs video, he looks close to his real age. His voice, however is still fascinating!
I don't think he needs the money (although his nine grandchildren will thank him for it).

  2. I didn't know he was still living, not to mention touring. I always liked him and had several LP records! I enjoyed these clips. Good for him!

    1. 'The Last Waltz' - one of Engelbert's biggest hits (I think it was released in Sept.1967). Its refrain says:
'I had the last waltz with you
      Two lonely people together
I fell in love with you
The last waltz should last forever'.

    2. I do remember every word, at least of the chorus :) 1967 was a great year for me.

    3. Glad to hear that Helen. I remember only the four lines of the chorus, but the lyrics of all his famous songs are on the Web. I heartily recommend reading them - lovely lyrics!

  8. I didn't know he was still alive either. Fun fact - my husband and I - 45 years ago - when we lived in Chicago - were right next to him when practice hitting golf balls at a range!

    1. Well, he was probably not singing there:) I suppose, practising golf has helped him maintain a good figure, though.

    1. Great singer , indeed.
His singing and songs reflect the values of anoher period, a better one, that of the 70, 80, 90, and the beginning of 2000.

  13. Yes, I, too, read not long ago about the pending tour by Engelbert Humperdinck. An amazing achievement for someone of that age. He takes me back to a time always worth remembering. :)

I hope all is well with you and yours, DUTA....take very good care.

  17. Just last week there was a long reportage about him ! And when I heard his age and saw him I was really surprised that he was already so old and in such a good shape ! That's wonderful ! Some of our residents at this age are in a quite good shape, at least their brains are still working but mostly the body doesn't follow and they sit in a wheelchair.

    1. There are many people that reach a respectable old age, and still look and sound well. That's encouraging, and makes us look at the aging process with more optimism.

  27. I must admit that I haven't thought of him for years. I also must admit that although I have trouble pronouncing my own name (it is Lowell, three of its six letters are L, and I stumble over the letter L), I never thought I had trouble pronouncing his name. Of course, this could be a case of me being ignorant of my own ignorance.

Do you have any knowledge of what has become of Philip (from Chronicle of a Croydon Boy)? I considered him my best male friend, and although we never met in person, we carried on a friendship via emails and phone calls for years, and then the day came that he was simply gone.

    1. Hi Snow. Thanks for your kind comment on Engelbert Humperdinck.
As for Philip, I was very fond of his writing, then one day he disappeared from blogging.
His last post was on 8 Sept, 2022. I understand you were on mail and phone with him, so no clue?!
I remember his wife was in poor health, and he was also worried by his daughter.
Clare, vision problems. He also mentioned a granddaughter living with her husband on the island of Mauritius.

I think by going back and reading his posts and mails, you might find some name or address to help you with info on him.
If you find something, please let me know.

    2. No, no clue as to what happened to him. However, he was old, in failing health, and wanting to die. Efforts have been made to get information from Claire, but she refuses to communicate with his online friends.

    3. That makes me very sad. A person with family, and no one comes forward to react with a word on his blog, or reply to a friend's enquiry.
I hope he's alive and well, but if not, I suppose it's possible to find out about his final journey through funeral houses and cemeteries.
