Untitled

Lately, I've been busy with my desktop computer. Its internal DVR wasn't working, so I had to take the whole thing to the Lab.

In one of my previous posts I mentioned that I prefer  desktop computer to  laptop. One of the reasons is that I'm sometimes able to solve problems that arise, by just replacing a cable or by opening the case to clean the fans with a compressed air duster, and check that  pieces are not loose or out of their slot.

Well, I couldn't do that now because of the warranty certificate. How come? If I don't manage to solve the problem of the DVR, and at the Lab they'll notice that I've opened the case and done things by myself, it might result in my warranty losing its validity.

I thought the technician was going to concentrate on fixing the DVR issue only, but he phoned me to ask permission to do a reset first, re-installing the OS .

Anyway, he was probably so deep in the Reset that he returned the PC with the DVR problem...unsolved. I had to return the PC to the Lab.  In the meantime, I've  made a wrong backup of my blog's theme and lost the layout with its widgets. I felt very sad about it;  my blog ,started in year 2008, was unrecognizable.

I worked hard on it for a couple of hours and , thank God, managed to restore it to the old theme and layout I'm used to. Still, I have to add and change some components that will enable me to perform certain functions.

As for the DVR, it got fixed at the Lab, but the content of my CD-s, belongs to the days of the XP operating system, and my present Windows 11  Media Player doesn't open them for me. So, I'll  have to work hard again, and try to solve the problem.

Hopefully, no more computer problems in store for me .

  1. You made a wrong backup of your blog's theme and lost the layout with its widgets :( I too would have been devastated, even though it wasn't another world war or a new pandemic. But if your blog started in year 2008, .you rightfully expected it to be in perfect condition for ever.
I wonder if we should be keeping a copy of ALL blog posts in a safe place, just in case computer issues arise again. I must ask my grandchildren for advice.

    1. Definitely, the posts should be backed up. I'm trying now to think of the best external method of doing that. I'm sure your grandchildren probably know what's best.

    1. Thank you. This kind of hassle is not good for people like me who lack computer education. , and have to rely on internet info and on intuition.

  3. Oh, these issues really can be so annoying and such a hassle. Although, they keep assuring us, it's progress and for the better. I hope you figure out a way to get to your CD stuff in your computer. Lately, a site that I am supposed to use for my medical stuff practically disappeared. and finally when I did find it, it was such a hassle to get into it and so different from before on how to use it.
I had tried to do stuff by phone and even the automated system wasn't working correctly. I feel we have so many things we bank on, and they keep telling us, this is what you should do, etc. And finding that they don't work are very discouraging.

    1. I hope too ( that is, to get to my CD stuff). If I own a device, I like to be able to deal with its problems, but as I'm not a professional, that's not always possible. And on the professionals , one can't always rely; they often disappoint.

  4. I am computer illiterate when it comes to fixing one, so I would need to take mine in. So glad you were able to get your blog back as it does take time and effort to keep one up. Janice

    1. Thanks Marie for your Good Luck wish. There are things to do on a computer, and I'm not always lucky at that.

  6. Computer problems are a real pain. I too prefer a desktop as things seem easier to solve, although as I´m self-taught I usually bumble around for quite a while before hopefully getting it right!

    1. "...a real pain" - that's right. I'm also 'self-taught (autodidactic), and so, things are not always easy for me.

  8. Oh my goodness - first thing - I am so sorry. There is not much worse than a computer issue.
Second is how smart you are. I could never ever do what all you did.
Third I am glad you got some of your information back.
    Good luck.

    1. Indeed. I don't wish anyone computer issues. My knowledge is based on info given on the internet. Whenever I have a problem, I check with the internet, and that often helps me solve it.

  13. Menos mal que eres una persona habilidosa y has sabido solucionarlo tu sola, porque de los servicios oficiales ya se saben que son todos iguales, van a lo suyo y cuanto menos tiempo le dediquen aunque estén en garantía, mejor para ellos.
    Un cordial saludo, amiga Duta.

    1. Sadly, one cannot always rely on the official services. We have to try and help ourselves;
it's possible if we ask the relevant questions on the internet.

  14. I've heard that there is a burgeoning movement here for manufacturers to make things that can be repaired by "normal" people, versus having to send them in or take them to a special approved place. Too often, we just want to throw in the towel.

    1. " to throw in the towel" - that's a new expression for me. Well, we too often get disappointed by those places that are supposed to fix our computer problems. Best thing to learn how to do it by ourselves.

  15. It's good to see you back, DUTA. I, Lee, was the "Anonymous" shown on your last post's responses, asking about your welfare. I hope "Anonymous" doesn't stand in for me this time around!

    Take care. :)

  17. Dearest Duta,
Oh, any PC problem can be so scary and at present time it is our memory, our archive of life...
In this I'm always alone as my husband does not touch any of it—I'm his lifelong secretary...
Good luck with your music recovery!
    Hugs,

  18. Hello Duta, I am here for a return visit, checking out your blog. You've been "at it" for a long time, too!
I share your view of desktop PC v laptop. For work, my employers have provided me with laptops, which is fine - I can take them to the office when not working from home, and of course it is not my job to fix any problems, but they have help desks set up for that.
For my personal stuff such as playing games, blogging etc., I have been using the same desktop PC for 15+ years. Now the OS can not be upgraded anymore, and I can not play my favourite games on it any longer. Therefore, as an early birthday present to myself, I have bought a new PC, configured to match the requirements of a new game O.K. will give me for my birthday. So far, the PC is still in its box, waiting to be unpacked and set up... but I need time for that, and a focused mind. Both will only happen tomorrow, I hope...!
    Wish me luck :-)

  20. I have a high-tech husband who is always fiddling about with my computer, for which I feel very blessed. I don't feel so blessed when he installs updates to the programmes I use, which inevitably requires me to re-learn the programme!
Hope your computer woes come to an end soon.

  22. Like yourself, Duta, I prefer my desktop to the tablet although the notebook PC is OK. Since my desktop is an all-in-one sealed older iMac there's no way I could open it up if anything failed. Glad you were able to reset your blog despite the unwanted frustration.

Life of yesterday was much easier for me. I am not of the computer generation so each new task or new device is rather difficult at first. Hence my new birthday gift from my son, a Mac book. The new keyboard to use does not have num numbers and I worked in accounting for years. I even have a hard time dialing a telephone because their numbers are opposite to a calculator. Peace
