A Matter of Health

I believe we could do much to help ourselves with health issues, if only we pay more attention to what happens to and around our body. Most of us, however, are deep down into what I call  "happy escapism" : reading, watching TV, hobbies - leaving health symptoms to doctor appointments mainly.

There was a time, some ten years ago, when I often experienced palpitations. Scary! What usually stopped them was vigorous coughing and trying to sit or lie down in a certain position if there was a suitable place nearby.

After a while, I noticed a very crucial fact - that it never happened at home, only outside or in a shop. That puzzled me, and I started thinking hard until I solved the enigma. It was the rather heavy backpack that caused the palpitations . Carrying it, triggered some tissue that interfered with my heart electrical system (cardiologists will usually recommend ablation of that tissue if things do not improve with meds or otherwise).

 *

After eliminating the backpack from my life, no palpitations  occurred to me ever again, thank God. Since then, I don't even carry a bag in my hands or on my shoulder. I put it in the little shopping cart or in the wheeled duffel bag I take with me when I leave home.

Whenever I gain a few pounds (usually in winter), my knees immediately make me notice them. So, if I don't want this to affect my walking  and I wish to avoid injections and surgery, the only plausible solution is to get rid of the weight surplus. No big deal after all, and, so far, it works, thank God again. (People who do a lot of walking should consider protecting knees with some sort of brace; there's a variety of them on the market).

The soles of my feet get treated more or less regularly by placing them on a roller massage manual device .
It does good to the whole body, not only to the feet.

*

Sometimes, pain comes and goes without apparently any cause or interference . If it persists, I'll try to locate it and understand its nature before I do something about it. I'll usually apply ice if I suspect swelling, or wear a compression sock if there's pain in the leg indicating possible, dangerous presence of a clot.

For a sore throat, I squeeze a lemon and drink the undiluted juice slowly. It has an immediate  beneficial effect.

*

Once, I cut my finger  in a bad place ; nothing I did could stop the blood flow , and I started to panick. Suddenly, I saw a clothes peg. I grabbed it and clamped my finger with it for a minute or two. It did the job, and saved me perhaps  a trip to the ER.

The flu is a very nasty condition to an elderly person: fever, headaches, overall weakness.  The annual flu vaccine was of no help to me. Since the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic, I've discovered the mask. No flu so far, and that makes me happy and grateful to the little health device. I feel sorry for myself for all those winters of suffering when no mask was recommended, only the annual useless jab.

    1. Nothing is easy, but it's possible. We just have to learn how to choose the least damaging option. As in the case with my knees - it's not easy to lose weight, but I'll make an effort to do this rather than have shots or surgery.

  2. Duta, you have provided some easy and very sensible solutions to health issues. I especially liked the clothespin to stop bleeding, a mini tourniquet

    1. I'm glad you think so. Oh, the clothespin. I felt it was an emergency, and I was willing to use anything that could stop the bleeding.

  3. Excellent post and well said! We should always listen to our bodies! They are always telling us something! And, hopefully, we can figure things out! I'm like you Duta, I'd rather go with out pills or injections! Big Hugs!

Indeed, listening to our body, often helps us get solutions to its problems.

  4. I'm the same with trying to figure out what the problem might be and seeing if I can solve it without seeking a medical opinion. I am spotty on getting flu shots but the one year I didn't and hubby did, we both got the flu, only because they shot that year was only 10% effective for the strain of the flu. Good hygiene is so important for illnesses like the flu and Covid, as you know. I'll have to try the lemon juice the next time I have a sore throat. Usually if I feel a sore throat coming on, I will MEGA dose vitamin C (like probably twenty 500 mg tablets over a few hours time). You can't overdose on vitamin C; get too much of it and you might have loose bowel movements/diarrhea but it won't cause any other problem. If I can catch a sore throat in the early stages of doing it, it rarely goes onto a cold or anything else.

    1. Vitamins(vitamin C included) are taken regularly for the strengthening of our immunity system. No vitamin will solve an acute situation like a sore throat. The undiluted lemon juice does wonders for me. I agree with your last sentence - catching the sore throat early, might prevent it from going into a cold.

    1. I was very lucky, indeed, to find out about the backpack, and so avoid meds or some invasive procedure that are the usual kind of treatment in these cases.

  6. Who knew? Certainly not my doctor! After eliminating the backpack from your life, no palpitations ever occurred again!

I had heart surgery 4 years ago and suffer only while walking in two circumstances: in hot weather and while carrying grocery shopping in both hands. The palpitations and shaky hands never happen when I put the shopping in my shopping cart.

    1. Oh, please don't carry any bags in your hands, only in your shopping cart! Don't take any risk!
I used to have everything on me, as I don't have a car. After the revelation with the backpack, nothing is on me anymore, only in the shopping cart.

  7. So many ailments we can fix ourselves - yet some people can't. A bit of weight put on in winter helps keep us warmer, can be lost in spring and so on.
    Take care.

  8. It's amazing you found the backpack was the cause! it's so important to listen to ourselves and our bodies, I agree.
We have found the same too - while we didn't do a lot of socialising in lockdown, when the schools were closed we had a healthy autumn and winter as there were less germs, haha! I'm hoping we can stay healthy this winter too, we will see, as masks aren't needed often here.

Hope your week is going well :)

    1. Amazing, indeed. I used logic asking myself how come no palpitations at home, but yes at the shop. What was different.Well, no backpack at home.

  9. Such an insightful post. I think we need to study ourselves daily. What works for one, might not work for another. I do like many of the solutions you mentioned. And nutrition is key! The less medication we have to take the better off we are and masking up is I am sure here for good.

I totally agree with your comment - the need to study ourselves, things are individual, nutrition is key, minimum medication, masking is beneficial.

  10. I had some chest pains after my husband's surgery. It was right after my ex-husband died and we were facing some horrid stress. Deep breathing helped, after they confirmed it wasn't my heart but my mind.

  15. Yes, I wonder if we all masked up more in the winter we could cut down on flu related illnesses and deaths.

    1. Definitely. Medical people have told in interviews that there were almost no cases of flu during the pandemic. That's a great revelation.

  16. Amazing that you discovered the back pack as the culprit. We all need to be our own health advocate and pay attention to our bodies. So many home remedies work as well as Western medicine whch doctors are too quick to prescribe. I beleiev in the whole body approach to healing. Have a great weekend.

  17. I love this post, Duta. And you are so right -- we have to pay attention. I also learned a couple of very useful things -- the straight lemon juice for the sore throat and the clothespin fix. I'm with you on the mask. Mine will be worn regularly this winter -- Covid issues or not!

  21. Thank you DUTA. Good post. I love it.

Especially what you write about your feet and the heavy backpack. I can relate with that!!!

It is nice to mention that I did a course, online, about "relaxing in covid time. One of the tips was foot massage. It has a lot of positive effects on our body. Are you able to massage your own feet? If not... I'd like to come and have a look around the corner :) You know it's a joke. I love your Wooden Foot Massage Roller. I am seeking for it now.

    1. You're welcome.
There's a variety of rollers for feet on the market: wooden and platic, flat and with spikes. Massage with placing the feet on the rollers is very helpful for relaxation of both feet and body, if it's done more or less regularly.

  22. I like the little roller gizmo you posted a picture of. I'm going to see if I can find one for my mom who constantly complains about foot pain. I know that it is neuropathy, but maybe it will help about.

Funny thing about knowing what is hurting us and changing it. Since I have been working from home, I have stopped by daily walks and I can feel the difference. I used to walk in place to a youtube video at my 10am break, at noon and again at 3pm, now I don't move at all! I really need to get that going again. Glad you were able to figure out what the problem was with the heart palpitations, that would be scary.

    1. Your Mom will greatly benefit from this roller device. You too. My first one was rather flat, and then I bought one with spiky rollers.
Walking is important. I have no car so I walk to the supermarket on the edge of the town - 30 minutes to, 30 minutes from, twice a week.
