Tutorials

Every once in a while, I enter You tube  looking for tutorials that would help me learn how to fix things in the house, on the computer, or expand my knowledge on a specific topic. It's not easy to find a good tutorial; it demands time and patience. Patience -  because the tutor's language is sometimes unclear, the speech rhythm inadequate, the accent strange, he/she doesn't always speak to the point, the tutorial is too long, etc...

However, when you find a good tutorial and 'mission gets accomplished', then you realize that it's worth every effort. Not only do you save money, but you also become less dependent on others. (Some see dependence of any kind - on people or on meds - as no less than  'slow death'). This dependence is especially risky  now, during the pandemic. It's not the right time to bring in people for repairs or any other tasks.

lucky bamboo

I once had trouble with my lucky bamboo plants (yellowing of stalks and leaves). After browsing through tutorials I found the solution - use of distilled water (instead of tap water); sealing the top of the plant with candle dipping wax will prevent it from getting rotten.   You can obtain distilled  water at home with a proper device, but so far  I buy the stuff, as it's cheap both,  at the pharmacy and at the supermarket.   I\ve got some 30 individual plants and I don't wish to lose any of them.

                      propagation from a 'dead'  plant

One of the more popular subjects  on You tube tutorials is painting of walls. People like from time to time, to refresh the paint on their flat's walls (in my neck of the woods, before Passover holiday, which coincides with Spring  cleaning).

I've done this several times and enjoyed it. However, it's not that simple. It requires preparation, a variety of brushes and tools, a good ladder, theoretical knowledge. Tutorials on You tube are very helpful with all this, and more.

  1. Thank you very much for the article! I also look at various tips on YouTube. Especially looking for handmade advice. You have a very beautiful plant. It's great that the advice from YouTube helped you)

    1. YouTube is a great place for tricks and tips on any subject!
The photo is not a good one but the lucky bamboo plant is a 'cool' plant that adds beauty and energy to a room! I've been having them for about ten years, and enjoy viewing them and taking care of them.

  2. Reading this, I probably don't use youtube enough or at all for tutorials. I don't know why, but I will remember your post and try next time I need to figure something out.

    1. Do use it, Inger, and remember to have patience as there are lots of tutorials on every subject, but few that successfully deliver the help you need.
Last week, I managed to replace the pipe under the sink in my bathroom, and I was very proud of that.

  3. I am a huge fan of YouTube! I've learned so much from it. Recently I bought my mom a Kindle reader and she found YouTube and she loves all the different arts & craft tutorials and she's tried many of them. I love to watch them for inspirational art lessons and ideas and for cooking. Recently I had a soup recipe that called for leeks. I had never tasted or prepare leek so I YouTubed how to do it and it was a big help.

I have one of the bamboo plants and have kept it alive for 2 years now, but good to know what I can do if I start to see yellowing on it. Hope you are well DUTA. Take care.

    1. I know, Alicia. I remember your posts on arts, and how YouTube helped with ideas and lessons.
YouTube is a wonderful platform for elderly people like me. I could watch musical performances and get the best entertainment from the comfort of my home.
And as I've said in the above post, it helps save money and being less dependent on others.

  4. You are so right, Duta, because I too have found that if I want to learn about something or how to do something, there is quite often a YouTube video available. That's not to say that all presenters do a good job. Sometimes, I have to look at quite a few to find someone who presents the information clearly.

    1. I also use How-To sites like Wiki how to where I can learn things step- by- step.
That is, I play "on both weddings" - visual, with videos (YouTube), and with text mainly (How to). I believe it's worth the time and effort.

'Useful' is definitely the right word for YouTube.

  7. Yes, I have learned a lot from Youtube! Especially, sewing, and crocheting. Although, sometimes, deciphering the language can be a problem and I do have to watch it over and over.
That is so interesting about the plants. And I am glad they are doing well. Thanks for visiting my storyblog, too.

I might try to learn crocheting from YouTube. Thanks for the idea.
Yes, the plants are doing well, so far. I check on them daily for yellow stains.

    2. The snow has left here, but we still have some plants we are growing inside just because we like to garden. I have watched YouTube on replanting veg you buy. Usually, you won't get any veg, but like onion, you can use that for chives.

Anyway, I saw the forecast. Some snow on the way. But it has been warm and windy here the last few days so that has been like a wake up call.

    3. Wow Ellie, you've changed your profile photo. Very nice!
Now, beginning of Spring, the weather is fickle in our part of the world too. Only here we don't have snow but desert-like heat.

    1. A tutorial "for just about anything" - very true.
These tutorials are not all good, far from it. We have to use our own 'filters' to detect the suitable ones, but still, it's a blessing.
The same applies to HOW-TO websites. Type your problem and you get solutions.
No doubt, YouTube and How-To are useful, helpful, beneficial sites!

  9. I love this post. I'd love to read more about your plants. I've found our well water is perfect for our plants. Monthly, when I clean my fish tank, I use the poopy fish water and the plants love it! Good job!

    1. Thank you, Jenn.
I'm very fond of the Lucky Bamboo plant. It's quite eye pleasing, and easy to care for :indirect sunlight and distilled water.

According to the Chinese Feng-Shui philosophy, this plant (botanical name Dracaena Sanderiana) is said to bring good energy and good luck in the house. It can be grown both in soil and in water. I prefer to grow it in water with pebbles for support.

Tap water contains chemicals , so it's not healthy for them. I don't know about rain water or spring, bottled water which are not totally pure water. Never tried it, as distilled water recommended in tutorials, seems to work.
These plants can survive long if taken good care.

    1. It depends. In computer issues, it's easier for me if things are explained step-by-step in text form. Video clips distract me from getting the point clearly.
If the issue is replacing something( a pipe for instance), then I would prefer to see with my eyes how things are actually done.

Blessings and happy preparations for Passover, whether you paint the walls or any other clearing of the `hametz`!! God bless you! ♡

I wish I had more Lucky Bamboo plants but they are shipped from Taiwan and China, usually expensive, and not always available. Yes, I do love to take care of them.
      God bless you too, Shayndel!

  17. I find tutorials always on YouTube ! This afternoon my Scrabble girls came and had forgotten the Scrabble. As we are also in the same painting class I put on tutorials for abstract painting and we had a lot of fun, because they used all kind of kitchen ustensils and even a roll of toilet paper ! But the result was real good !

  18. That's a lot of plants to take care of, Duta! And I understand why you enjoy them. Since we no longer have cats, I've purchased various plants and baby them all. Most of the problem I have is placing the right plant at the right window for sun/light exposure. Now my Christmas cactus is blooming for Easter. The internet is a great thing and I too have used YouTube many times, and you're right, it does take patience finding the correct tutorial! And I love the musical performances on there! Have a good rest of the week!

    1. Regarding my plants - the main warning is - no direct sunlight. They can grow well in any other kind of light including artificial light, and perhaps, even in the shadow.
As for cactus, I believe it needs the sunlight.

  23. Oh yes, I regularly use Google and YouTube. For gardening, for example. I really love plants.

Today I got a kalanchoe. That is a beautiful strong plant. With yellow flowers. Do you know this plant too?

    1. Hi Aritha, Enjoy your kalanchoe plant!
No, I'm not familiar with it.
I have no garden, and indoor plants usually die on me.
I'm almost addicted to this one plant Lucky Bamboo; it has no flowers, needs simple care, is decorative (in a nice container it can be a great gift) and has a positive energy in the room.
