The Omegas

As sometimes happens, one thing reminds me of another.
The coronas (yes, plural, as there are several corona viruses: common cold virus, Sars, Mers, Covid-19..),
remind me, by way of contrast, of the omegas - omega essential fatty acids : omega 3 (linolenic acid) and omega 6 (linoleic acid).
The first group, the coronas, seeks to destroy immunity, the second, the omegas, helps strenghtening it.

Omega 3  (found in oily fish, nuts and seeds) has brain, vision, and heart benefits. Omega 6 (found in meat, dairy, vegetable oils) along with its 'cousin' omega 3, also plays a crucial role in brain and body functions.

The thing is, that Omega 6 has 'invaded' Western diet violating the balance between the two omegas, and practically pushing  Omega 3 out- thus causing some harmful effect on health  ( blood pressure, stroke, heart attack, water retention etc..).

bottle of omega 3 capsules

I know of a successful chess player who's also a doctor. Someone has told me that he's heavily on omega 3 as this helps him plan and perform his brilliant chess moves and win the game. Good for him! There's a lot of money and honour involved in these games.

And after all, omega 3 is not 'ritalin'  (used in ADHD), or some other drug, known as enhancing  performance.
It's just...fish oil which happens to improve brain activity and stabilize mood - recommended to all or most of us.

    1. Hi Aritha,
Bad taste? I would think one feels no taste at all, as they get swallowed.
Anyway, the choice is big. There are lots of suppliers and qualities on the market.

    1. Indeed. The omegas are not produced by our body but taken from our diets, healthy diets, I must add.
A little healthy capsule can also make a difference.

I wish I wouldn't be so lazy, and also take it on a daily basis, as it's considered good stuff. But I am rather lazy. Pity!

  5. I was familiar with Omega 3 but not Omega 6. Learned something new here. Supposedly Omega 3 is good for lowering cholesterol in one's body.

    1. Yes, omega 3 is the more popular of the two omegas. He's the 'good guy', supposed to help in quite a lot of health issues.

    1. I like fish, but it's rather expensive here.(what isn't??). The omege 3 supplement is also not cheap. However, one should make an effort and have some fish oil, one way or the other.

    1. As far as I know, people usually prefer taking capsules. It's easier that way. But, perhaps, tablets are more effective.

  8. Highly recommended, "The Omega Principle" by Paul Greenberg. Great book. I work conscientiously at including Omega 3 in my diet and minimizing Omega 6.

I see it's relatively new (published in 2018), and there are quite a few reviews on it indicating its popularity.

That's the usual pattern with people; they start taking something, then after a while , put it aside.
It's hard to be consistent and stick to some supplement on a regular basis.
      Best wishes to you too!

  17. Thanks Duta for another informative post. I did take fish oil tablets for years, most likely the Omega 3 variety, unsure why I stopped. That said we do have fish on a regular basis and hopefully that is as helpful as taking the capsules. I have some left and may resume using them based on thus post.

Sometimes, it suffices that the person taking it, believes in its efficacity, in its making a difference. Psychogically, it could improve things.

  21. I am of the opinion that particularly during this harsh time the people in the world are going through...added supplements to one's diet can't hurt! I certainly have been adding them to my own diet over the past couple or so months...along with, as always, of course...plenty of fresh, good food. (And ice cream!!) :)
