The Over 70s

A popular female astrologer in our country says the coronavirus attack will slow down at the end of this month (25 April, to be exact), and in September scientists will come up with a vaccine and  some efficient anti-viral drug.

On the other hand,  a well-known researcher, Dr. Sharon Moalem (israeli born, lived and worked in Canada  and USA) says in an interview that the corona virus is here to stay with us, and that's good, in his opinion.

There are two key things that help  lowering numbers of  infected people: testing and lockdown .
To stop a pandemic there's need to know who's infected, and take drastic measures.

It seems there are not enough testing kits, testing facilities, testing personnel, so the statistics in most countries is rather inaccurate, and disaster might well be on its way.

As for lockdown- it works where there's discipline only.  So far, we've got over seven (7)thousand cases in Israel. Not surprising, as there is no discipline here.

The over 70s do follow the instructions (I'm in this age group too). They know that it is for their own good. Most of them are frail, vulnerable, with underlying conditions and a weak immune system; thus they are more likely to get seriously ill and spread the virus among family, friends and others.

However, there are many voices out there now stating loud and clear that the beds, ventilators, oxygen, medications and medical staff in the hospitals,  as well as the volunteering activities  are needed for the younger ones who have to work hard  and keep economy going.

I dislike these voices. They sound dangerous and inhumane to me. They present the over 70s as standing in the way of the Health Care System to win the battle against the virus, and of the government to bring about economic recovery.

  1. I think that attitude is pervasive, everywhere. Although I can't claim to know cultures anywhere better than here in the US, our Baby Boomer generation gets little respect from the generation here, that is know as the Millennial generation. I've read comments, where they would be okay with just letting us die off. I can only surmise that they hated their parents and grandparents, and don't realize, that some day, if they're lucky, they too might be old. We weren't born old, but that's all they see. Anyway, I live in Wisconsin, and many of our cities have pretty much closed down. It's not legal to congregate now in groups, only essential stores remain open (grocery, drugs, hardware), and most people I know are staying in. There are always those, though, who don't feel vulnerable, and don't care if they might be a part of the spread of this virus. Scary times, DUTA.

    1. Scary times ,indeed!
I read somwhere a comment that reads like this: don't count even on your children and grandchildren for mercy, as you might find out there's no such thing.
Although it sounds grossly exaggerated, it makes one think. Crazy things like the virus, could make people act crazy.
      May God protect us!

  2. Wow, that is so frightening for the over 70's, I can't even imagine how terrified you must be! I read an article yesterday that said that EMT's in New York are being told to not resuscitate people in cardiac arrest because they can't take them to the hospital after because the hospitals are filled with corona virus cases. Just stay inside DUTA, don't take chance and I hope you stay healthy and safe.

    1. Hospitals are bad places anytime, and not only for the elderly. Now, with the corona thing, one hears and reads about horrific happenings.
Thanks for the good wishes, Alicia.

  3. Wow that is scary about limiting services for the over 70s. It kind of takes away from the sanctity of life I do believe. Every life is precious in God's sight but then history bears out that people sometimes like to take the matter into their own hands and try to justify one race or ethnicity makes them not worthy of life. I don't go with astrology so I'm putting my bet on the researcher. It is interesting who gets it and why they get it. Hubby read an article a few weeks ago that those with A-positive blood are more susceptible. Not sure how reliable the source but hubby is A-positive and healthy still and I'm B-positive. We are socially isolating and distancing as much as possible.

    1. I'm with the researcher too, especially after reading an interview with a chief hospital doctor. He said something like this:
Everyone will get this virus, only we have to make sure they get it gradually, within two years, not two months, as the hospitals cannot cope with this situation of hundreds of sick people at once.

    1. You're right, of course.
      The problem - Health Care systems are controlled by politics not by necessities, and so hospitals are not prepared to tackle pandemics. They lack equipment and staff;
and so doctors reach a stage where they have to decide who stays and who goes.

    2. Christine, so true.

Duta, it shouldn't be that way. We all know that, but somehow if is the way it is. Horrifying.

    3. Let's hope it won't be that way, it won't come to that terrible choice of who lives (the young ones) and who dies (the elderly).

  5. Scary times, discipline is much much needed. In here people are quite disciplined, police are supposed to punish with tickets all the people who go out with no reason and I tjink it is good. Too bad, there are some who still doesnt care! A few minutes ago I saw a mother with a toddler from my window, just casually strolling around. Hope they will be fine. Stay safe everyone!

    1. I'm beginning to value discipline even more than democracy. I'm afraid the two don't go well together, at least in certain places, and at certain times.
      Let's hope for tge best!

  6. Most countries around the world seem to have been little prepared for this pandemic, in varying degrees, of course, but there are commonalties to be sure. It is perhaps easy to postpone preparations for the future when there is no imminent threat, in the same way that people live for the moment, spend and borrow, borrow and spend, with no thought of investing for retirement. And then, suddenly, the crisis hits them square in the face.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Indeed, countries, like us individual people, live in the present, borrow and spend like there's no tomorrow.

We cannot know when exactly a crisis will strike, but we have to prepare for it. Disasters are happening frequently on the globus, no country will be spared.

  7. We're hearing that here too -- should older or ill people be allowed a ventilator when they will surely die anyway and a young one can live on. It's wrong. I think this will be around us for a long time, in waves. I hope your astrologer is right about a vaccine in September. I'm not so optimistic. So many are being "good" and following guidelines here, but many are disregarding distance rules and sterilizing things. I worry about Rick every time he goes to the market. Delivery options aren't really great. But then, neither is shopping.

    1. I totally agree with you, Jeanie.
I wish the astrologer is right, but like you, I'm not optimistic about that.
Things around us (disregarding of guidelines, faulty delivery options)don't make it any easy.

  8. I've lived my life. I'd be happy for a younger person to have equipment if it will help them. This is the attitude of many of us here. My husband has cancer. He is worried. We still try to live in the present moment.

    1. You've got an altruistic attitude and that sounds beautiful.
However, this situation could have been avoided if only there was no lack of leadership in most countries.
We are not to make it easy for those who have failed to invest in the Health Care System,to be ready for a pandemic.
Wishing you and your husband good health and long years of happy life!

  9. Our most famous astrologer already failed in his predictions in this mattter:(Life has to come back to 'normality' otheriwse we will all dye from hunger

    ReplyDelete

    1. Right. Hunger is a very close and real threat. Hunger and violence of those who are hungry and in debt.

I've been thinking about that even before the coronavirus, as our country imports a lot of basic food items, and disregards local industry. That's very dangerous.

  10. In Belgium we are lucky to have enough hospitals and intensive care rooms for everybody there is even some space left. As such a worldwide catastrophe has never happened nobody knows how long it will last. For sure is they still have not found a vaccin in the whole world either. We have a lack of masks and testing material, but apparently that will arrive soon. We are not allowed to go out only for food shopping and medications. No travelling either.

  11. Many restrictions here and worldwide...and rightly so.

Of course, there are still those who blatantly, ignorantly go against what is advised. Those who think they are 10 feet tall, and bullet-proof...or virus-proof.

    Take good care, DUTA...stay safe...stay well. :)

    1. Yes, the whole world is in it. Restrictions are good for a certain period of time, but we have no idea for how long, neither do the authorities. It's a big Unknown.

  12. if we could believe that astrologer it would be wonderful news, bud sadly it's hard to even believe the experts now. Each news report is more dire than the last, which is why I restrict my viewing to 1X daily. Realistically, panic and anxiety and fearfulness are not good for keeping healthy, just as keeping away from others. It is unfair to single out a certain age group and, like you, we are in that one as well. So we try to do what we can to self-isolate and keep a distance when we need to go out for essentials.I know you are doing the same, so keep on keeping safe, my blogger friend.

    1. "It is unfair to single out a certain age group.." - definitely.
Who knows? Maybe a miracle will happen and the astrologer's prediction will be a winner.
I believe in God, I believe in miracles - and this gives me strength and hope.
      Take care.

  14. It is getting worse down here, in Louisiana, but I have not heard anything about un-fair in giving ventilators. Seems the seniors and people with preconditions are the most need those equipments, and they have right to have them, depend on their severity.
Here, they seem respect and very care to seniors, some stores have specific day and time for seniors (60s over) only, after their stores have been disinfectant and before open to public. Then, public can get in to stores very limits and keeping distance 6 feet.

    Stay well and a hug!

  15. Yes, with Sue (commenter above) sending warmest wishes to you Duta! Along with a verse personalized for you!! Actually I read your post last night but didn't know how to comment at this time, and As I was reading in the Psalm 91 before bed last night, these verses spoke to me for you!! I am going to "personalize it" for you!

"Because Duta has devoted her love to Me, I will deliver her. I will set Duta securely on high because she knows My Name. When Duta calls on Me, I will answer her. I will be with Duta in trouble, rescue Duta, and honor her. With long life will I satisfy Duta and show her My salvation." Psalm 91:14~15

  17. I agree sounds inhumane to me too. Here we have lock down and tests but don't think there are enough tests here either I think in most countries the number of people who have the virus are far higher than the data. Some suggest 6 times higher. It went through the family of two of my brothers in NL and they were not tested. You stay safe and take care. Kia Kaha Duta

    1. That's for sure; the number of infected people is much higher than the one in the published data. Testing is key, and there's shortage of testing equipment.
