The Saxophonist

Several years ago, I wrote a post about a  cafe in my hometown - a small place specializing in coffee brands and selling  a variety of pastries and snacks (rather expensive).

Sometimes, the cafe  would also offer its customers a mini musical show, performed by one or two music players.

Since Covid , things don't look too bright about this place. Anyway, they've come up with an attraction: a metal little statue of a jazz saxophonist. It is placed outside the coffee shop ,near the pavement. The sight of it is enjoyed by its customers, as well as by customers of the adjacent McDonalds eatery  and  passersby.

                                                              jazz saxophonist

I enjoy contemplating it too . Whenever I'm in the area I stop to have a look at it. It reminds me of some great music and musicians. Of course, it also reminds me of Bill Clinton, the USA president ( a saxophone player in his college days), who has contributed to the popularity of the sax.

(Examining closely the several photos I took of the figurine, made me angry.  It is not well-maintained; it seems to be covered with a thin layer of dust. It should be cleaned often as it is outside, close to traffic and subject to climate elements).

  2. In the antique world in which I own an antique store, we call that patina. If one cleans up an old piece it loses its value. Just a thought. It is a struggle for small businesses to succeed as they do not have the buying power to offer lower prices, but we do need these small shops to survive. Janice

    1. You may be right about the patina. I don't know. To me it looks in the photo like plain dust.
The place is small and easily becomes crowded; because of Covid, people look for bigger space. So, it has become less successful.

  4. I too would be interested in the statue. I'd enjoy studying it and then I would enjoy watching people as they looked at it. Shame it isn't taken care of better though.

    1. The statue is up, people can't touch it, and don't notice the dirt. Nevertheless they derive much pleasure from looking at it.

  5. Lovely to see that you have returned - 'welcome'.
One would think someone was delegated to clean that statue due to where it's positioned - a cafe needs things to be clean, makes me wonder whether it's clean in the cafe..

  6. Thanks for welcoming me. I'm still tired from the holidays, and have a lot of things to do , but blogging does me good, so here I am.
The cafe is not what it used to be before Covid, and that's a pity.

  9. Glad you are back! Oh, you might have to write those guys an anonymous letter to keep this guy clean. But after Covid a lot things aren't like they were. Less staff. Around here, some sold out. Our Down Town Coffee shop was sold to someone who actually knows how to make coffee..so there are some pleasant surprises. All the best to a productive October.

    1. That's a good idea! Thanks. I'll have to think about it, though, as I'm not in the habit of writing anonymous letters.
All the best to you, too!

  10. Perhaps the coffee shop owners/operators have so much on their hands just trying to stay afloat after the hard times experienced during the pandemic, regular cleaning of the statue is way down on their list of priorities.

Take good care..nice to have you back, DUTA. :)

    1. Could be. I haven't made any inquiries. Perhaps there is even a change of owners.
Thanks for the comment, and your kind welcoming words, Lee.

  11. Pity the figure isn't maintained but it is a wonderful way to remember. I'm sorry the cafe isn't the same -- so many places aren't. But maybe it will rebound in time. I hope so.

    1. Right. Despite its apparently poor maintenance, it's still a great attraction, and a wonderful way to remember musicians.

  15. Welcome back, Duta. The statue has its charm to be sure but its placement could be better as that fan seemed distracting to me. I wondered if music is played as well.

    1. Thank you, Beatrice. You're absolutely right about the placement.
No, music is not played. I don't think they'll get permission for that. I even suspect they've got no permission for the public placement of the statue.

  16. HI Duta! Nice to see you again, I hope you had a good Holidays and were able to refresh and renew, although I you wrote in one of the above comments, that also there is an aspect which requires effort, I pray that you will receive rewards in spiritual ways and other perhaps unexpected blessings in this new year!!

I imagine your hometown has many inspiring spots to stop and enjoy, i remember another article you wrote on the music school near you, and this shop. Hope there might be an effort by the shop or the community (headed by you?!!) to clean up the statue and other new fresh touches to bring enjoyment to those who come in or even pass by.

    Blessings! Shalom and love, Shayndel

    1. Now, after Covid, it's past its glory, mainly because of its small, intimate place. It's the eateries and coffee shops with large spaces that attract customers. After all, the virus is still here.
