A Ray Of Light

main building

The prestigious school of contemporary music 'Rimon' is a ray of light in my neighborhood. ('Rimon' is the hebrew word for pomegranate fruit).

'Rimon' school of Music was founded in 1985. It has over 500 students (israeli and international), and 90 academic staff members.

The school offers studies in all contemporary fields of music: Jazz, pop, rock, hip-hop, folk, blues, country, electronic - and  seven (7) majors; composition, arranging, conducting, songwriting, performance, music education, music production.

Of great importance are the ties of cooperation established with 'Berkley' college of art in Boston. There are agreements, connections, and exchanges between these two schools with great benefits for both parties.

'Rimon' school is located on a quiet residential street, in a modest neighborhood. Its buildings and the various facilities, encircle a green lawn and yard in the very center of the campus. So, the classrooms are actually at the back, less interfering with  the street and neighboring houses.

Students that come from afar rent flats in the vicinity and become during their study period , part of the local population, contributing to its quality and standards. Most students get involved in community musical projects and in volunteering performances and activities in hospitals, elderly care facilities, at-risk youth clubs.

It should be emphasized that many of 'Rimon'  school graduates have become well-known music professionals and performers both in the local music industry as well as throughout the world.

  2. There was a former elementary school on that spot. Rimon music school has almost 37 years of existence! During this period it has managed to become famous both locally and abroad.

  3. Yes, it does. It was in the late afternoon hours, and I think it's the end of the academic year, before some vacation.

  7. I wonder how hard it is to get into the school with so few students. I wonder if it is a rigorous process to qualify. Fascinating though!

    1. Well, I wouldn't say that over 500 students is "so few students".
Anyway, as far as I know, admission is based on 2 things: 1. written application with details of one's musical background; 2. audition, interview.

    1. Yes, Rimon is a lovely name, reminding us of the beautiful, healthy fruit with the same name.
Thanks for your prayers, and love, Shayndel dear.

  9. Sounds a wonderful place to do with music and interesting that most of the noise is at the back. Always good to have an intuition like this one to teach the people how to play music and the theory of it as well.

    1. Classrooms, concert rooms at the back, definitely minimize the musical 'noise', and help build a healthy cooperation with the neighbors.

  10. I am very impressed that the students get involved in community musical projects and in volunteering performances eg in elderly care homes. These are great cultural opportunities for the audiences, and great exposure for the musical students.

My late parents loved their concerts every Sunday afternoon.

    1. Am I to understand from your comment that your parents lived in Israel?
Volunteering performances are a great musical chance for both: the performers and the audience. Both sides benefit from Iit.

  11. Rick would love nothing more than live that close to a remarkable music school like that! He'd be wanting to take classes and go to recitals every day! What a treat to have such a spot in your neighborhood and the great diversity of talented young people it brings to your neighborhood!

    1. Rimon would be perfect for Rick who plays the guitar. The founders are accomplished guitar players and much attention is given to instrumental music, guitar playing being at the top of the list.

    1. That's how things are nowadays, Nancy. We're all expected to contribute somehow to the community. Not that it always helps, but we have to try to make things better.

  16. It looks like a lovely place to study music. One thing I can tell about you is your love of music. Every time you post a video about a musician I learn something new. Do you play any instruments? I tried and failed at guitar, accordion, clarinet and piano. I just could never learn to read music!

    1. In my late years of childhood I studied the violin, following my late big brother. He was the talent in the family, and worth every penny paid to the private teacher. I was not good enough, My brother also played the harmonica, and I followed him in this too. I still have it but I forgot how to play.

  18. It's nice to read about positive things going on vs. so much unpleasantness. Good for the young people at Rimon for being so involved with their musical studies and within the community as well.

  21. Those attending the school, find in it a lot of fun and interest. They also get a very useful diploma at the end of 3-years of study.

  22. I must remember to ask my daughter who's a college counselor and loves music if she's heard of this. The person in the photograph doesn't look happy that her photo was taken. Sounds like a wonderful school, a real plus for the community.

  23. What a wonderful musical place to have in the neighborhood. We have a college prep school near us that sits in a secluded wooded area. It draws students from all over. They recently did landscaping and exposed the front of the building, aleviating some of the mystery.

    1. Exposure of the building will attract both students and tourists. The secluded wooden area with its mystery won't do any good to the school's and students' reputation.

The school's versatility of styles and genres make it very attractive for those wishing to study music here. Everone finds a niche where he can best promote his musical potential, and that's of utmost importance.
