Summer Street Fashion

Our summers are very hot, with high humidity in certain regions and extreme dryness in other; this calls for a sort of "loose"  street fashion style.

During summer days, the dominant sight has always been  one of half-naked people: bare shoulders, arms and legs. Favorite clothing items: shorts and sleeveless, strapless tops.

Nowadays , however, people are more aware of the sun's damage to the skin,   Besides, one has to walk only a short distance from the air conditioned car or bus to the airconditioned office or mall; so shorts are gradually been replaced by airy skirts or thin pants, and fewer backless tops are seen around.

Cotton is the best fabric for summer clothes; it's breathable, light, sweat absorbent ,and comfortable. There are various types of cotton ; a good cotton has a cooling effect on the body.

.My very favorite is the stuff manufactured in India. I've got an array of breezy indian- made cotton skirts, and some adequate t-shirts;   they make me feel each year that I'm more than ready to meet Summer. (For travel, I'll usually replace the skirt with thin pants made of cotton or rayon).  Here's a selection of my summer outfits:

thin rayon pants

As for accessories - not much is needed : a hat (made of cotton or natural straw), sunglasses, and sandals.

In summer, we are usually lighter in  body weight ; so, coupled with the lightweight clothes upon us - we may sometimes feel we are at the top of the world.

  1. Lovely summer clothing choices. I usually stick to lightweight pants. When I was younger I did wear shorts more.

    1. Thank you.
Lighter pants are a favorite of mine too.
Of course, age affects the way we dress.

  2. Cotton is a wonderful, natural, breathable fabric, and I recommend it highly. It is not always easy to find pure cotton clothing here, however.

    1. Indeed so. I'm not fond of fabric blends. I always prefer the piece of clothing to be made entirely of cotton; apparently, that is not so easy to find.

  3. The lighter the better here during our summers, too. Presently it is winter here. I much prefer the cooler weather to the heat and humidity of summer. I find it easier to rug up and keep warm than it is to get cool. Our winters here where I live aren't really that cold, anyway.

When I was younger, the heat of summer didn't seem to affect me...one of the negatives of getting older, I guess! :)

    1. "the lighter the better" - very well put!
Our winters are short and relatively mild, yet, I'm not happy during winter as I usually catch a miserable cold.

  4. I love your shirts and skirts, and I have skirts about the same yours. I bought them at the clothing store, the cloths mostly from India and Pakistan.

India's also got hot, humid summers - so it makes sense to feel good about their fabrics.

  5. Speaking of India, have you ever been there? I imagine you have :)
I generally hate summer, I'm hot even in winter, so summer feels like having a fur coat on me while it's 45*C outside.
Your outfits are very comfortable and airy! Sadly, I did notice that youngsters these days have no respect in dressing, girls all wear shorts so short that their bums are hanging out, and while I do think that human nakedness is gorgeous, natural and lovely, there should also be some respect as we're not animals but humans, but others do not seem to think so, so walking around city in the summer is often like walking in a stripclub. I do love it when women wear dresses and when men wear shorts and flipflops.

    1. No, I haven't been there.

Our public transport (buses, taxis, trains) are air-conditioned. That also affects the way people dress, not only age and education.

Your idea of 'women wear dresses' and 'men shorts and flipflops' is usually the norm in many places, and it's nice and acceptable.

  6. We have a very unusual heatwave 40° and women never wear shorts in town, only tourists. Mini skirts yes, but not shorts. Usually very light dresses where the wind can blow through.
BTW I didn't pay more as a single traveller, I only shared my room with a lady in the group, I liked, otherwise I could have asked for another one to share the room with me. We were at least 5 singels ! It depends on countries and companies. In the UK you often pay for the room and not for people.

  7. Organized tours in my country don't like singles. So, if they can provide you with a roomate, that's OK; if not, you pay the price of the double room.

The heat wave in Europe doesn't seem to change the basic rules as far as street fashion is concerned - no shorts in town, you say.

  8. It's been very hot here in NC, and there been lots of bare arms and legs. I agree, and love your outfit choices which look quite cool and comfy. Hope you're doing well! Hugs, RO

    1. Yes, it's been hot in many places on the globe, and people are trying to cope with the heat through clothes (or rather lack of..), and AC.
Thank you for your kind words, RO.

  9. We are in the middle of a heatwave here with temperatures above 100, this weekend is supposed to be super hot and humid. I usually wear a sundress during those days, it really helps to have clothing that can circulate air.

DUTA, I have to say, I love you style and my mom would love it as well. That brown skirt with the design at the bottom is gorgeous! Hopefully we will have cooler weather soon and maybe you can do a post about your autumn/winter clothing style.

The brown skirt is a favorite of mine too.I wear it in autumn as well; it's more solid cotton and not airy like the indian stuff.
(Autumn here is still hot. Only from end November we get cooler weather).

    1. It's not that the skirt is midi, but that I am..mini. A midi skirt goes well with someone taller than me.

  11. I wonder if it's hotter there or here in the American South. We get close to 100 degree days and the humidity can be quite high. It's like an oven!

Everyone likes cotton. The only material probably better than cotton is bamboo material( the cerise one on me in the picture).

  13. Hello Duta, you look most comfortable in your lovely outfit and sandals.
I like your style of clothes and the pattern on the skirts - you can mix and match all of them.
I saw above where you mentioned high humidity was the killer for you... I feel the same. We were able to live inland in remote Australia in the highest of temperatures but it was a dry heat and that made all the difference.
Light cotton weave is most comfortable and the Indian tops and skirts are lovely against the skin.

    1. Thanks Sue for your very kind words. Indeed, humidity is worse than dry heat; light cotton feels good against the skin. I believe the indian breezy cotton clothing is ideal in our summer weather.

  15. I agree with your comments about humidity, Duta. When we lived in VA, the summer weather reports would also talk about the heat index which would be the temperature and humidity together and most summer days it would be in the high 90s. here it is not as humid in New Hampshire, but people who live here still complain that it can get too hot even if the humidity is not that high. Cotton is also my preferred fabric for summer wear. Your choice of hot weather wear looks lovely and very practical as well.

  17. I'm at an age, where summer skirts are what I wear, rather than things that are shorter. I choose skirts that flow, are lightweight, and comfy as heck. I love your choices, and the way you look in them!!!

  18. Since my lip cancer, I worry much more about the sun, though I'll go out but with heavy duty 100-spf sunscreen. You're right about cotton -- it's very cool!

Thanks for your visits -- I'm very behind on catching up with blogs!

    1. Sorry to hear about your lip. People usually apply sunscreen to face and arms; your story is a warning - lips are also to be considered.

  19. These are great stylish outfits. And cotton is the best for this hot and sticky weather.

Skin cancer is not to be taken lightly. Today's teens see themselves as invulnerable. Sun Screen! You will be sorry if you don't.

  20. I like to wear cotton in the warmer summer months, I find it much more comfortable.

I like skirts and tops that flow and are not too close fitting, they keep me cooler. I like the look of your summer outfits you've shared here.

    1. Luckily, cotton, nowadays, comes in a great variety. There's organic cotton, bamboo cotton, and cotton made of or blended with all kinds of natural fibers. Thanks for your kind remark on my summer outfits.

  21. I have two shorts. But usually I wear (midi)skirts. I was brought up orthodox (Christian) and we, girls, always wore long, long skirts. And never shirts without sleeves. Times change. I changed. But I think it's good to wear cotton clothes when it's so warm. I am very white (skin type 1) so I am careful with my skin. My father had skin cancer. His brother too. Clothing is important. Your skirts could be my skirts. Love it.

Midi skirts, and shirts with sleeves are also protective during summer. And cotton is considered unanimously, the best summer fabric.

  22. Ahh, I love those pretty flowing skirts. Since I retired I don't wear them anymore, mostly pants or capris and T-shirts. I go for comfort now. Have a great week.

    1. Pants and T-shirts are the key for comfort. In our summer, however, pants are not the first choice as it's too hot. A fluffy skirt will do better.
